The Tuckshop (made by locals): East Meets West

The Tuckshop

A fusion of the familiar and new, The Tuckshop (made by locals) cafe and bar is established next to the newly built park connector along Guillemard Road. The brain child behind Tuckshop actually comprise of an Englishman, an Italian, a Frenchman and two Singaporeans.

They decided to have a concept that is of East-West with a common Singapore inspired thread running through. Such a concept can be seen in the dishes and design of the shop and is very apt for our modern Singapore that embraces people from all over the world.

First thing that caught my attention was the long communal table that is fashioned out of metal scaffolding in the middle of the shop which is good for group outing. While the seats outside give a relaxed, kampung feel and is suitable for alfresco dining.  They have also retained the metal panels used during closing hours of the shop.

Their menu is unique too, as you will be able to see traces of local flavour infused into Western dishes. We had their Drunken Fish and Chips ($16) which is deep fried salmon with beer infused batter, truffle fries as sides and accompanied with wasabi mayo. Frankly, I wasn’t impressed due to the absence of the beer flavour, but the truffle fries did salvage the situation.

The other dish we had was the Pan-seared Ribeye Tataki ($16) which was served in medium-rare and papadum as sides. Tataki = “pounded” or “hit into pieces” in Japanese, as such the beef was served in neatly sliced pieces. Being a fan of fries, truffle fries ($8) was also on our menu as appetizer!

The Tuckshop is also a great venue for gathering and to chill with friends while having chilled artisanal and crafted beers! Meanwhile, they’ll be relaunching in late September with more drinks and an expanded menu, so stay tune for it!
